The best time in your book production process to book an indexer is when you have a firm(ish) idea of when the publisher will have the proof ready for indexing and when they want the index finished by. This should be a fair while before the proof is sent to you. Note that publishers and packagers don’t like it if you say you will do your own index and then at the last minute decide you don’t have time and they have to hunt around and try and find someone.
